The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Lagos State Chapter received a boost during the week with the acceptance of Winners Golden Bets to be the main sponsor of this year’s Lagos SWAN Cup.
According to the Vice Chairman of Lagos SWAN, Wale Joseph, who is also a member of the Sports Committee, the company has agreed to partner with the association for this year’s Lagos SWAN Week.
“We’ve received their blessings and they have agreed to be part of the 2014 SWAN Cup,  it is a welcome development and we are very grateful for their support and understanding. However, we are also in talks with other corporate bodies to come and partner with us in the Week’s activities, which promise to be huge”, Joseph stated.
The SWAN Week is slated for 24 April through 2 May with the traditional football competition, seminar and other events lined up.
According to Lagos SWAN Chairman, Fred Edoreh, who held a meeting with members of the association’s sports and marketing committees, the seminar will have as its theme: ‘Sports Reporting and Nation Building’ with resource persons drawn from the sporting world and the media.
The seminar, Edoreh said is meant to bring to the fore the importance of the sporting industry as an important tool for nation building. The One-Day seminar is schedule for 29 April.
The week will open on 24 April with football matches among media houses in Lagos State with the defending champions, Complete Sports Newspaper staking the title it won last year.
Meanwhile, Media houses have been advised against registering ineligible players in their teams as the football competition is meant for only practitioners on the sports beat, ‘as severe sanction awaits any media house that contravenes the rules of fair-play’.
However the media houses have been urged to make sure their registration formalities are completed in good time.
