Warri Wolves, on Sunday, closed the gap on Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars, at the top of the Glo Premier League standings following their 2-1 win at Bayelsa United.
The Warri club have now trimmed Kano Pillars’ lead at the top of the league table to one point. Wolves raced into a two-goal lead inside the 22 minutes through Freedom Omofoman and Oghenekaro Etebo before Olufemi Oladapo halved the deficit.
Paul Aigbogun’s men now have 52 points, just one behind table-topping Kano Pillars. The Nigerian champions, still without some of their key players like Rabiu Ali, lost 0-1 at Sharks.
Fortune Omoniwari’s goal was enough to settle the game at the Sharks Stadium though Christian Pyagbara lost a spot kick which could have made it two-nil.
Enyimba however dropped to fourth place from third after they were defeated 1-2 by Gombe United, while Nasarawa United moved into third place in the standings after edging Nembe City 3-2.
Meanwhile, two promoted sides, Crown FC and Giwa FC shared the spoils at the Lekan Salami Stadium. They played a 1-1 after Onyekachi Okafor cancelled Chris Madaki’s goal to save Crown FC the embarrassment of losing at home.
