Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are through to the third round of the US Open after both secured straight-sets victories on Thursday.
Serbia’s Djokovic beat Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1 6-3 6-0, while defending women’s champion Serena Williams thrashed fellow American Vania King 6-1 6-0 in 56 minutes.
Eighth seed Ana Ivanovic lost 7-5 6-4 to Karolina Pliskova, while Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard overcame Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-4.
Also, third seed Petra Kvitova beat fellow Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-4 6-2 and Victoria Azarenka, runner-up to Williams for the last two years, beat American Christina McHale 6-3 6-2.
