Lawal, Other Nigerian Players Vow To Shine

With the 13th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Open barely a week away, top Nigerian players have expressed their readiness to make their mark in the International Tennis Federation, ITF Pro-circuit.
The Nigerian stars have not really impressed in the competition, but they told our man that things will be different when this year’s event serves off next week.
Speaking with eyeonthesports.com from his Taraba training ground, Shehu Lawal was optimistic about his chances at the Etisalat Nigeria and FCMB-sponsored championship.
Lawal also stated clearly that his training has been near perfect and he only needs a fitness training to be in top shape before the tournament begins.
“Right now, I’m in Taraba State, training really hard as I’ve always done. I’ve been playing well and believe I stand a chance of going all the way.
“But I should leave for Kaduna to acclimatise because I understand that Lagos is hot at the moment.
“If all these are in place before the commencement of the tournament, I’m sure that I can go a step further than I did last year” the former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Open winner said.
Speaking in the same vein, CBN 2013 losing finalist, Clifford Enosoregbe believes he has been preparing for the tournament and should stand a chance against his more fancied foreign counterparts.
The player was however coy about his chances of raking in more ATP points, maintaining that the Championship always answers many pre-tournament questions.
He said: “Of course I’ve been preparing as hard as I can for the championship and I really hope to do well against any opponent.
“It’s often difficult though, to say how far I can get because the tournament is different from just words of the mouth. Having said that, I still hope to do well.”
The Nigerian players are expected in a close ‘camp’ to further boost the country’s chances of going into the crucial stages of the tournament this time around.
