The Nigeria Scrabble Federation, NSF, says about N12 million will be given as prize money to winners at the 7th Governor Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics slated for 25-29 September in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Farouk Baba-Inna, a member of the NSF Technical Committee said the money would be shared among winners featuring in the four categories of the tournament.
Baba-Inna said the players are to compete in the Masters, Intermediate, Open and Veteran categories, noting that the tournament will improve the standard of the sport in Nigeria.
“The governor is an avid scrabble player, and he has decided to invest in the growth of the game in the country,” he said.
It was gathered that NSF plans to use the championship as a platform to measure the improvement of players’ skills, while they would go home with lucrative prizes.
The Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics is one of the most prestigious events on the Nigerian Scrabble calendar.
The 6th edition took place from 26-30 September 2012 at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort in Uyo, with former world champion Pakorn Nemitramansuk of Thailand winning the impressive top prize of USD 15,000 in the Masters division, while he was closely followed by Nigerian aces; Ogbakpa Rex and Paul Sodje.
