Rivers Angels Down Delta Queens

.In Nigeria Women’s Premier League –

One goal in each half extended Rivers Angels lead on the league table with a win against Delta Queens at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The FA Cup finalists, Rivers Angels were unable to break down Delta Queens defense making it difficult for them to penetrate and create meaningful opportunities.
Veteran striker, Stella Mbachu on several occasions was a terror to the visitors’ defense.
In the 26th minute, she was brought down and Rivers Angels’ left back, Ngozi Ebere, converted a direct free kick from about 25 yards putting her team in the lead.
Delta Queens could hardly create a shot on goal but came close in the 36th minute when a long-range strike from Ngozi Okobi, hit the cross bar.
The table toppers doubled the lead in the 55th minute when Mercy Amanze slotted past Ihuoma Oruegbu who was in goal for Delta Queens from a well connected cross from Ebere Orji.
The visitors seem to be missing 6 of their players who are on duty in the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Despite substitutions made in the game, it could hardly have an impact in the game with the Port Harcourt side running away with the victory.
Coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon was satisfied with the victory.
“At this level we are okay. We needed the point badly so as to remain on top of the table .We are not thinking of dropping any point till the end of the league season, said Okon.”
“If we can get this kind of officiating anywhere just like we had today, then there is no team that can stand against us, we just have to prepare for our matches, he said.”
Delta Queens coach, Eleta Zenus said it was a good game. “If you think Rivers Angels have 3 or 4 players on duty in the U-20 national team in Canada, then I’ll tell you I have 6 of my players there but am not complaining or have I complained or did I complain? I have not complained it was a good game, said Zenus.”
Rivers Angels remain on top of the Nigeria Women Premier League table with 36 points and 4 games in hand with 2 games left to play in the league, while Pelican Stars are second on the table with 32 points and 4 games in hand.
Rivers Angels next play Pelican Stars on Saturday at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.
