The 2013 Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Open 2nd Leg continued on Monday despite the heavy downpour which delayed some games in the early hours of the day.
In one of the Men’s Singles decided at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Theophile Segodo of Benin defeated Nigerian star, Henry Atseye 7-5, 4-6, and 6-4, while Shehu Lawal outstroked Sanni Adamu in straight sets of 6-4, 6-1.
Also, Kehinde Alade defeated Ivorian Sylvain Anibie 6-0, 6-7, and 6-0, David Chaplefesh Forchap of Germany beat Christian Paul in straight sets, Mithun Nurali of India defeated Robert Mensah Kpodo of Ghana 6-3,6-1, while Daouda Ndiaye of Senegal beat Felix Hounkpeyi of Benin 6-3, 7-6 (3).
In the Women’s Singles, Nina Bratchikova of Russia (2) beat US-based Nigerian player Idia Amen 6-0, 6-1, Greece’s Maria Sakkari beat Xi-Yao Wang of China 6-1, 7-5, while Melanie Klaffner of Austria defeated Zariah Razafimahatratra 6-4, 6-1.
In the other matches of the Women’s Singles, Jasmin Steinherr of Germany defeated Anke Poncelet of Belgium 6-2, 6-2, Russian Margarita Lazareva over powered Ronke Akingbade of Nigeria 6-0, 6-1, and Italian lady, Gioria Barbieri showed she has better strokes as she defeated Michaela Frilka of Germany 6-0, 6-1.
Meanwhile, organisers of the ITF-sanctioned tournament say the spectators that come to match venue from Sunday 20 through Friday 26 October, to watch exciting matches at the championship have the chances of winning Gionee smartphones, some products of Lifemate Furnitures, Etisalat customised phones and recharge cards.
“The spectators are expected to pick up free entry ticket booklets at the gate of Lagos Lawn Tennis Club and other designated distribution points. On every match day, fans will present their retained ticket copy/part booklet at the gate where these would be stamped and automatically numbered, with an enabling records of appearances on a data base. Detached stumps will be used for the draws,” said Prince Wale Oladunjoye, the Tournament Director.
Thirty people are expected to win N50,000 worth of Lifemate Furniture products each. Many Gionee E3 smartphones with market value of about N35,000 each and Gionee E6 smartphones of about N65,000 market value each are also to be won with several Etisalat phones and recharge cards of different denominations.
“If any spectator comes for three match days, such a person will be given an Invite to watch the grand finale where Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), will be the Special Guest of Honour. The final ceremony will be strictly by invitation,” he said.
“Exempted from these exciting rewards for only the fans are all members of the LOC, our media partners, members and staff of Nigeria Tennis Federation, players, referees, ball boys, staff of Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, including workers in the Administration, Bar-men, Waiters, security guards and food vendors within the premises.
“Only the club members and their guests as well as those who are able to secure free tickets are eligible,” said Oladunjoye, who is also the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Fashola.
