Latest reports reaching Eyeonthesports.com say a new Futures tournament which will attract foreign players will hold in Abuja later this month.
Tournament Director, Barr. Ikani Agabi, who made this information available to our correspondent, explained that the tournament, which is a bigger version of the annual Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, will give out about $15,000 to the winner which includes hospitality.
He noted further that players from over 20 foreign countries had already signified their interest in participating in the two-legged tournament, which will hold in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital from 27 April through 10 May, 2015.
“The tournament will offer about 35 ATP points for each leg as against the 30 which players get for winning the Governor’s Cup, so it makes it bigger in that regard.
“The prize money is $15, 000 including hospitality, this is more than the $10,000 winner’s prize money offered by the Governor’s Cup.
“Many foreign players from over 20 countries have signified their interest to play in the tourney, while others are still being expected to confirm their participation.
“We have received confirmation from players coming from Germany, France, Ghana, Spain, South Africa, Brazil”, he told eyeonthesports.com.
Asked how Nigerian players will be able to participate in the tournament since there would be higher ranked players in the championship, Agabi explained that there would be Wild Cards playoff in Abuja a week before the commencement of the competition.
He noted that, “unlike the Governor’s Cup, where Nigeria’s best players get straight Wild Cards, we want them to slug it out here in Abuja. This will allow us an opportunity to see them in action before giving out the Wild Cards.
“We shall base it on the present form of the players. There shall be 10 Wild Cards to be issued out; six for the qualifiers and four for the main draws”, he concluded.
