Okagbare Leads Team Nigeria To IAAF Championships

The 15th IAAF Championships will kick off on 22 August and Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor will lead Nigeria’s charge for medals along with 22 other athletes who have been invited to represent the country by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

The reigning Commonwealth champion will be confident going into the biggest Athletics meet outside the Olympics on the back of her performances this season, which has seen her run the second fastest 100m race of her career at the Paris Diamond League, where she beat top athletes such as Shelley Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown at the meet in Shanghai, and also winning a Silver medal at the Jamaica International Invitational Race and Gold at the at the World Relays in the Bahamas.

After coming second at the Anniversary Games in London last month, the Nigeria’s track Queen said she was happy she finished the race healthy and ready to focus on the World Championships where she would be competing in only two events apart from the 4x100m relay.

Meanwhile, Africa’s fastest woman will be looking to improve on her performance at the previous championship in Moscow where she came away with a Silver and Bronze Medal, and this will be a good test ahead of the Olympics in Rio which starts on 5 August, 2016.
