Nigeria Reps Summon Buhari Over Killings

Nigeria’s parliament has called for President Muhammadu Buhari to appear before it to explain what his government is doing to stop violence between herders and farmers.

Thousands of people have been killed over decades in clashes between cattle herders and farmers over land and water in central states.

In the most recent attack, 16 Catholics were killed at a church in a village in Benue state this week. It has been blamed on herdsmen. Eleven ethnic Hausa traders were killed in Makurdi in retaliation.

Some 385 people have died in the conflict since January, according to the US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project.

Mr Buhari’s critics say he hasn’t stopped the violence because the herders are his kinsmen from the mainly Muslim north of the West African country.
