Waidi “Skoro” Usman, the new National Featherweight boxing champion, is full of appreciation to GOtv, the pay-TV company and headline sponsors of the GOtv Boxing Night.
The 22-year old, who knocked out Dare “Fighting Machine” Oyewole in the fifth round of their title fight at the GOtv Boxing Night on Sunday, said without the opportunity provided by GOtv and the other sponsors, he would not have been a champion today.
‘‘I have to thank GOtv, 1960 Bet, Custodian Life Assurance, SuperSport, MultiChoice, other sponsors and Flykite Productions for making this happen.
“Without them, I would not have the opportunity. God will bless them for what they are doing for boxing”, he said after his crowning at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos, venue of the GOtv Boxing Night.
The new champion is not ready to rest on his oars. Already he has his eyes set on African, Commonwealth and World Featherweight titles in the near future. Skoro, who has won six of his eight last fights through knockouts, also explained how he dethroned Oyewole.
“It wasn’t an easy fight, but I went in well prepared since I knew what was at stake. My coach, Siki Ola, also warned me against overconfidence. Here I am today (Sunday) being decorated with the National Featherweight title,’’ he said with glee.
The next edition of the GOtv Boxing Night is slated for 25 January 2015.
