N13.8m Up For Grabs At Gov’s Cup

African top stars including Nigerians taking part in the 2014 Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Invitational championship stand the chance of winning N13.8 million (about $84,000).
This is the total prize money which the Local Organising Committee, LOC, is putting at stake for winners in the week-long tournament, which serves off at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan from 17-22 November, 2014.
Vice chairman of the LOC, Engr. Afolabi. Salami, who represented chairman of the LOC, Chief Pius Akinyelure, told a press conference in Lagos yesterday that “whereas our regular two-week Futures tournament has a total prize money of $80,000, added hospitality which includes accommodation and breakfast at the Eko Hotel and Suites for our foreign invited players and a N10,000 daily subsidy in lieu of accommodation for Nigerian players for the period they remain in the championship”.
He said that the Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, has sent invitations to top class Futures players-32 each for Men and Women’s Singles and 32 each (16 pairs) for the Men and Women’s Doubles.
He also disclosed that a clinic will be organised for the kids from ages 4-16 on the last day of the tournament with participants from schools that have been gracing the finals with gifts of used balls to their schools for training.
Vice President of the NTF, Yemi Owoseni appreciated the support from the sponsors which include Etisalat Nigeria, FCMB, LASACO and a host of others. He added that the federation and indeed the African governing body of the sports, Confederation of African Tennis, CAT, is grateful for their support.
Manager, Sponsorships, Etisalat Nigeria, Miss Orah Egwu, said though the company is into telecommunication in Nigeria, Etisalat is proud to associate with organises of the Governor’s Cup, adding that “we’ll continue to support Nigerian sports”.
President of Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Barrister Sam Egbuchunam said the club is ever ready to host world class tennis tournaments.
Among the dignitaries present at the press briefing were Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development of Lagos State, Mr. Wahid Enitan Oshodi, Tournament Director, Governor’s Cup, Prince Wale Oladunjoye, Secretary General of NTF, Mrs. Gloria Ekwempu-Chinwuko and Barrister Kolade Olutekunmi, General Secretary, Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
