Motorcyclist In Soup For Raping 18-Year-Old Passenger

A 29-year-old motorcyclist, Semiu Adekunle, who allegedly raped an 18-year-old girl was penultimate Wednesday in Lagos released on a N500,000 bail.

Adekunle, who entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the charge of conspiracy and rape is a resident of Agege area of Lagos State. An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Ogu , the accused committed the offences on April 6 at Agege area of Lagos State. He said that the accused and one other person still at large conspired to gang-rape an 18-year-old student.

“The accused raped the girl in turns,” he said.

Ogu said that the accused had canal knowledge of the girl when her mother sent her to the market to buy foodstuff.

“The girl’s mother sent her on errand to Agege market to get foodstuff and in a bid to quickly run the errand, the mother gave her money to take bike. The girl boarded the motorcycle of the accused to take her to the market and bring her back home.

“After she finished her shopping, the accused picked the girl at the entrance of the market, but told her that he intended to pick his friend, who was waiting for him at the time. The girl agreed and the accused picked his friend and on their way he veered off the road into an uncompleted building,” he said.

Ogu said that the girl followed after the accused forcefully compelled her to enter the building with them by brandishing weapons to her face.

“When the girl saw the weapons they were holding, she had no option than to follow them. They parked the motorcycle inside the uncompleted building, pulled off her dress and had sex with her, one after the other. They left her to her fate thereafter,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the girl sighted one of the accused on his motorcycle after a month of the incident.

“When the girl and her mother wanted to board a motorcycle to church at the motorcycle park, she recognised the accused that picked and raped her that fateful day.

“She alerted her mother who quickly rushed to a nearby Police Station and the accused was arrested,” he said.

The offences contravened sections 260 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Section 260 prescribes life imprisonment for rape.

The case was adjourned to May 31 for mention.
