Chelsea Manager, Jose Mourinho is delighted to count on Nigerian player, John Obi Mikel again, as the Blues confront Basel in a crucial UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Mourinho said he has known Mikel for almost all of his professional career, and that he knows exactly what to expect from the 26-year-old each time he is called up for a match.
“Mikel is Mikel,” he said. “Mikel plays today the same way he was playing when he was 18. He plays today the same way he played like I fielded him against Valencia in the quarter-final of the 2007 UEFA Champions League. He was 18 years old then and I could recollect leaving Makelele on the bench and I played Mikel in that match”, Mourinho said.”
The Portuguese coach reeled off his midfield man’s traits, making light of his striking record at the opposition end of the pitch.
“He’s exactly the same; position, stability, control,” Mourinho explained”.
“To score a goal is a miracle, but for Mikel to lose a ball is also a miracle. In some matches he’s very important. In his style of play and with the qualities he has, he’s a very good player”, Mourinho said while pouring encomiums on the Super Eagles midfielder, who has been shortlisted for the BBC and CAF Player of the year awards.
Mikel was voted King of the Pitch in the maiden edition of the Nigeria Pitch Award held in Calabar two weeks ago.
