By Nike Adekunle –

A 29-year-old mechanic, Shakiru Adebayo, who allegedly removed the diaper of an 11-month old baby girl and attempted to defile her has been brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Eyeonthenews.com’s reporter was on ground when the accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mr F.S Azeez on a charge of attempted defilement.

Adebayo, who resides at Ogba Road, Ogba, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Azeez said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. According to the prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, the accused committed the offence on November 5 at his residence.

He said that the accused attempted to defile his neighbour’s 11-month-old girl. Ajayi said that the accused carried the girl into his room and wanted to have sex with her before he was caught.

“The mother of the girl left her for her eight-year-old elder brother to go to the market. The accused took the baby from her brother under the pretense of playing with her.

“Adebayo stylishly carried the baby into his room, laid her on bed, removed her diaper. He was about to insert his manhood when the mother of the girl suddenly opened his door and discovered that her daughter was about to be defile,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the mother reported the case at the Police Station and the accused was arrested. The offences contravened Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The section reports that the accused may be jailed for 14 years if found guilty of attempted rape.

The case was adjourned until Nov. 21 for mention.
