Liverpool Back In EPL Contention

Liverpool returned to second spot on the Premier League table when they defeated Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Goals from Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge put the Reds in control, before substitute Ki Sung-Yueng pulled one goal back to set up a tight finish.
Liverpool dominated play from the onset and came close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute but Suarez curled his free kick inches over the top left corner.
Three minutes later Daniel Sturridge cut inside from the right side before curling the ball over the crossbar from the edge of the box.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were restricted to long range efforts with Sunderland sitting quite deep into their box and in the 26th minute Joe Allen could only drive his effort wide of the target.
The deadlock was broken in the 39th minute when Gerrard fired his free kick towards the top right corner after Suarez had been brought down by Santiago Vergini just inside the box.
The visitors almost levelled matters three minutes before the break when Connor Wickham’s long range effort picked up a wicked deflection, but Simon Mignolet was able to dive to his right to turn the ball behind for a corner.
Liverpool doubled their lead three minutes into the second half when Sturridge collected a pass from Jordan Henderson on the right side of the box before firing a left-footed into the back of the net with the aid of a slight deflection from Wes Brown.
