What Leadership & Management Have In Common

Hello sports fans, it’s a pleasure for me to be back with this edition of my column which addresses what ‘Leadership and Management’ have in common.

Leadership and management are two of the most commonly used words when dealing with certain tasks and both involve motivating people to achieve a common goal.

However, the differences between leadership and management are there for one to see.

Leadership is based on a person’s ability to influence others to work towards achieving personal and organizational goals.

Leadership is often the process of influencing individual and group activities toward goal setting and achievement whereas management involves much more.

While leadership is a part of management, management also includes performing the other functions such as planning, organizing, and controlling.

Bear it in mind that effective managers must be effective leaders and the successful leader is one who succeeds in getting the others to follow his ideas.

A leader is sometimes not a manager and a manager may not be a leader. Let’s check out some differences between leaders and managers:
Manager              Leader

Focuses on systems…Focus on people & structure
Short-range view…..Long-range perspective
Relies on control …Inspire trust
Asks how and when …Asks what and why
Eye always on the Bottom line…Eye on the horizon

Accepts status quo ..Challenges status quo
Classic good soldier..His own person

As one can see from the above, leadership and management have clear differences. While management is like a ship which tries very hard to avoid turbulent waters and still wants to reach the destination safely, whereas leadership is like a ship which goes in turbulent waters not only with a plan to reach the destination but to conquer all odds as well.

So, let’s utilise the opportunities provided by the meaning of these words to better the lots of the society that we live in.
