A housewife in Lagos State, Keji, would have died prematurely but for the intervention of people as the husband, a commercial bus driver, Solari Oputa, beat her ceaselessly with an iron rod and threatened to kill her.
The husband was brought to the Badagry Chief Magistrates Court on Monday to face charges of assault and threat to life.
The 50-year-old man, who lives at Number 1, RS Oputa Street, Cele Naiza in Ijanikin area of Lagos, said he is not guilty.
According to the Prosecutor, Innocent Uko, the accused, who strangled her in an attempt to kill her, committed the crime on October 10 at his house.
“They had an argument and the accused started beating and threatening to kill his wife.
“He boasted that nothing would happen if he killed the woman,” he told the court.
The offences are punishable under Section 56 (a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Mr Adeleke Alhassan, asked the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to November 1.
