Lagos 7s Rugby Tourney Holds At Onikan Stadium

The Lagos 7s Rugby tournament, which was in the cooler for sometime due to poor sponsorship will return this weekend at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos, as EXP, SGS and other companies have thrown their weights behind the event.
The tournament will give Nigeria an opportunity to assess the players and select her Rugby team for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh next year.
Tertius Strauss, Regional Director of EXP, a brand activation and experiential marketing agency said there is need to develop Rugby as a giant sport in Africa.
“The truth is that Nigeria is blessed with talent and young people who are eager for new sports and opportunities. But big business is missing, while we need to create an opportunity to develop Rugby in Nigeria and get it off the floor”, Strauss said.
One company, which has taken the leap of faith, according to Strauss, is Promasidor, the manufacturers of Cowbell Milk. He disclosed that the eight schools participating in the Cowbell I-Try Rugby development league, will showcase their skills at the 7s tournament at Onikan on Saturday and Sunday, 23-24 November.
It was gathered that four schools will send their U-14 girls teams, who will play ‘Touch’ Rugby, a form of Rugby, in which full contact tackles are prohibited, while there will be four senior boys schools playing full contact Rugby.
The schools section begins at noon on Saturday, with the semi-finals and finals to be played as curtain raisers to the men’s Cup final on Sunday afternoon.
The men’s club tournament pools hold early Sunday morning and the elimination rounds and finals are slated for the afternoon, while entrance to the stadium is free. The organisers say security will be tight to ensure the safety of players and their fans.
“A big attraction is the chance for spectators to win a Toyota Avanza 1.5 AT valued at about N3.5 million. The spacious, reliable and well-appointed vehicle is being sponsored by Mandilas Toyota. To win, all it takes is to hit the cross bar with a ball kicked from the 22 metre line”, the organisers said.
“With food and drink available at Onika Stadium, the Lagos 7s is a great chance to take the kids and family to have an inexpensive fun day out this weekend”. -Source: Sportsday.
