Number one seed at the ongoing Tombim Abuja ITF Futures, Nedunchezhiyan Jeevan, has expressed his satisfaction with the maiden tournament, stating that he prefers the male only event to the mixed Futures.
In an exclusive chat with eyeonthesports.com at the players’ lounge inside Package B of the National Stadium, Abuja, venue of the championship, the Indian player stated that the presence of ladies have always been a distraction to him as a person.
Spotting a wry smile during the interview, Jeevan noted; “I love this place (Abuja) more than Lagos because there are fewer people here.
“Not having ladies in this tournament has also been good for me because they have always been a distraction to us. But, with only male players here, I am more focused and I am enjoying my game as well.
“The prize money is $15,000 with hospitality, that is really massive. The fact that one can also win points from this tournament is an added motivation to come here”.
Speaking on the organisation of the event, the petit player hailed the organisers, insisting that the set up has been fantastic, especially with the tournament just making its entrant into international tennis.
“Honestly, it’s a good tournament. The organisation here has been impressive. I know that the one in Lagos has been on for a while, but this one, making its debut is tremendous.
“I believe that the organisers can work on a few lapses that they may discover later, otherwise, it has been a great event”.
He also gave his impression about Nigerian players, stating; “The Nigerian players could be really good and difficult to defeat, but we always find our way round the games. I have defeated two of them so far, but the results are not a representation of how the games went.
“To me, Clifford (Enosoregbe) is Nigeria’s best player. I watched him play against the guy from Uganda and I was impressed with what I saw.
“I have a lot of respect for him and I hope he does well in the second leg and pick more points to compete in more ITF Futures because he has the prospect of playing with top players in the world”.
Jeevan is through to the Quarter final stage of the competition and will be playing his match against Crowley Keith-Patrick from USA in one of the early games schedules for Thursday.
