Some Nigerian players began the 2014 Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Invitational tournament with victories in their first round matches at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan on Monday, 17 November.
The week-long tournament, saw tournament’s Number three seed, Clifford Enosoregbe defeating Jonah Samuel in straight sets of 6-2, 6-4 in the Men’s Singles, while Lawal Shehu struggled to defeat Sunday Emmanuel 7-6 (5), 3-6 and 7-5.
Also in the Men’s Singles, Sunday Maku out-stroked Thomas Otu 6-2, 0-6 and 6-4, Nonso Madueke beat Ikeckukwu Iloputa in straight sets of 6-1, 6-1, Albert Bikom defeated Jinadu Owolabi 6-1, 6-4 and Sylvester Emmanuel beat Jonathan Okwudili, 6-3, 6-0.
One of the foreign players invited for the tournament, Duncan Mugade from Uganda however got the best of his first round match as he defeated Nigeria’s Candy Idoko in straight sets of 6-3 and 6-2.
In the Women’s Singles, Angel McCleod defeated Comfort Spencer 6-4, 6-2. Interestingly, Dubai-based 13-year old Angel McCleod, won the U-14 girls event of the recently held NNPC Junior Tennis Circuit in Kaduna.
Beauty McCleod, Angel’s mother, also defeated Bukola Olowu 6-1, 6-3 in another Women’s Singles.
After the first round games, some of the players expressed their ambition in this year’s tournament. Sylvester Emmanuel said: “I am happy to have won my first round match of the Governor’s Cup today. I’m here to play the best of my game and win this tournament by God’s Grace”.
Beauty McCleod believes she has fulfilled her desire against Bukola. “My game against Bukola Olowu was a repeat of our match at the NNPC tourney in Kaduna. I dared her before this match that I will defeat her and that was exactly what I have done. It was nice winning, you’re always happy when you win”, McCleod said”.
A total of 32 male players registered for the tournament, while 24 female players were listed in the women’s event.
Meanwhile, more first round matches will be played on Tuesday, 18 November in the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Men and Women’s Doubles events.
