Barely a month to the 13th Annual Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, Nigerian players have expressed mixed feelings about their participation in the International Tennis Federation, ITF pro-circuit.
Nigeria’s regular player at the tournament, Shehu Lawal, told that he would have registered for the tourney a long
time ago, but could not do so because the form is not on the ITF
According to the veteran tennis player, “I’m aware that the Governor’s Cup will commence on 13 October, but the registration form is not on the website.
“However, I’ll register as soon as the form is available so that I won’t be left out of this year’s championship.”
CBN 2013 losing finalist, Clifford Enosoregbe, also confirmed his participation in this year’s edition of the tourney, in which Nigerian players have failed to impress over the years.
“I will participate in the Governor’s Cup this year but I don’t think I’m hundred percent ready” he said.
However, former junior player, Onyeka Mbanu, may have been forced out of the championship due to a niggling knee injury which the player claimed he suffered during training.
Onyeka does not see himself taking part in the apex tennis tournament in Nigeria, and has ruled himself out. He said: “I don’t think I’ll play in this year’s tournament because I’m injured. I suffered a knee injury and I don’t know when I’ll be fit to play, certainly not before the commencement of the championship.”
Also expressing his pessimism about participating was Nonso Madueke, who hinged his availability on his ability to get sponsors before the tournament serves off in Lagos.
Nonso said he would love to feature in the tournament, but may not achieve his aim if he does not get financial support to prepare for the event.
“I’m looking forward to participating but if I don’t get sponsors, it may be difficult for me. I need money for my training and other logistics” the losing Doubles Finalist at the CBN Open affirmed. checks revealed that only Shehu Lawal and Clifford Enosoregbe have been included in the Men’s Main Draw of the circuit, while no Nigerian female player was listed in the Women’s category of the Main Draw.
