Pay-TV company, GOtv, has unveiled its plans for the revival of boxing in the country. The company’s initiative to return the presently comatose sport to rude health was announced at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday.
The press conference, held at Old Skool Restaurant, National Stadium in Surulere, had in attendance top officials of GOtv, leading lights of the country’s boxing bodies, boxing legends, boxers and sponsors of the initiative tagged ‘GOtv Boxing Night’.
GOtv Boxing Night, which holds on Sunday, 23 November at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, will feature six professional fights in different weight categories.
Martin Mabutho, Marketing Manager of MultiChoice Nigeria, promoters of GOtv, explained that the company’s decision to intervene in boxing was motivated by its strong commitment to Nigeria, and the desire to ensure that boxing, a sport that once did the country proud, is rescued from the abyss in which it has slipped.
Mabutho added that MultiChoice Nigeria, whose huge investments in the Glo Premier League and the Nigerian Basketball League makes it the single strongest supporter of Nigerian sports, is determined to ensure boxing is revived and urged boxing fans and the general public to join hands with GOtv by attending the GOtv Boxing Night, which will be broadcast live on MultiChoice’s SuperSport channels.
Mrs. Elizabeth Amkpa, General Manager GOtv, who spoke along the same line, disclosed that fans have the opportunity of winning 50 GOtv decoders via a raffle draw that will be conducted at the event.
The pick of the six fights on the card is a National Featherweight Title bout between Dare “Fighting Machine” Oyewole and Waidi “Scoro” Usman.
Also on the card are the bout between Adewale ‘’Tiger’’ Abbey and Tope “Young” Ogunshakin (Heavyweight); Stanley “Edo Boy” Johnson will face Saheed “Happy Boy” Olayiwola; Chijioke “Painless” Ngige engages Sunday “Capo” Olalekan (Light Middleweight); Dele “Lagelu” Adeleke will enter the ring with Rashid “Afonja Warrior” Abolaji (Light Middleweight) and David “Lucky Boy” Ekpeyong will exchange blows with Mohammed “Fearless” Tijani in the Featherweight.
The boxers, many of who were present, have vowed to treat fans sumptuous boxing at the event.
In attendance at the press conference were Captain Danjuma Maigari (retd.), Vice President, Nigerian Boxing Board of Control; Mr. Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General, Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, Mr. Larry Ademeso, Managing Director, Custodian Life Assurance; boxing legends Hogan Jimoh, Joe Okorodudu, Joe Lasisi, Obisia Nwakpa and Bob Alagoro.
