Giwa, Nembe Out, As Glo Nigeria Premier League Kicks Off

As the 2013/2014 Glo Nigeria Premier League, NPL, officially kicks off on Friday, 7 March, only 18 clubs will feature in the elite League this season, while Giwa and Nembe City Football Clubs have lost their slots.
It was gathered that the League Management Company, LMC, has expelled Giwa and Nembe for failing to ‘substantially comply with the minimum registration requirements’.
Giwa were expected to begin their NPL campaign against defending champions, Kano Pillars, while Nembe would have played their first match against Rangers International in Enugu today.
But their opening matches including all the fixtures involving Giwa and Nembe for this season have been cancelled.
LMC Chief Operating Officer, COO, Salihu Abubakar said; “Since the deadline for submission of registration form closed about two days ago, we’ve been scrutinising the registration materials returned by the clubs and can now state that Nembe City and Giwa FC did not meet the minimum requirements to participate in the Glo Premier League this season.
“Having said that, I want to state that Giwa and Nembe have been withdrawn from the fixtures and all matches involving both clubs are cancelled”.
Earlier during a press conference held at the SWAN Secretariat inside the National Stadium in Lagos, LMC boss, Nduka Irabor said the league body would do everything humanly possible to ensure that the Nigeria Premier League attains its ‘Professional status’.
The LMC stated that the registration requirements are based on licensing principles that promotes the development of the league for the benefit of all participating clubs.
Meanwhile, the encounter between Heartland of Owerri and Dolphins of Port Harcourt remains a top fixture amongst the Day One matches slated for Friday, 7 March.
The encounters between Sunshine and Enyimba, Warri Wolves and El-Kanemi, as well as the match between Bayelsa United and Sharks have been postponed due to CAF engagements this weekend.
