Nigeria’s number one player, Clifford Enosoregbe, showed his superiority in the country’s tennis as he defeated Abdulmumuni Babalola, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8, to win the inaugural Ikoyi Club Tennis Challenge.
The exhibition match which was hosted by the tennis section of the Ikoyi Club 1938, was a high profile pairing between Nigeria’s best tennis players at the moment.
Enosoregbe, who put up some eye-catching displays, stroked to a 4-1 win over Babalola and quickly won the first set.
In a show of skills and determination in the second set, he got back into the game from 1-4 down to tie the game at 4-4 to the excitement of the spectators at the tennis court.
He, however, lost the second set 5-7 to Babalola, who came back determined to make up for his first set loss in a keenly contested show of superiority. But Enosoregbe finished the job by winning the last set.
“It’s always good to get on the court, and to win against such an opponent felt good as well,” Enosoregbe told eyeonthesports.com after the encounter.
“Hopefully, we can get to play top quality matches like this from time to time to show Nigerians that we have talents in the sport right here,” he added.
In the female category, number one female tennis player, Sarah Adegoke, wasted little time in seeing off Ronke Akingbade, as she won in straight sets of 6-1, 6-3.
Adegoke, 17, did not look like relinquishing her grip on the number one status and did so against another strong opponent in less than one hour.
The teenager, who was applauded by the spectators during and after the encounter, told our correspondent that it would be lovely to have the competition more often for top eight players in the country.
She stated that: “if we have the top eight male and female players come around to compete, the competition will get stronger and the players will be excited to come around.”
Meanwhile, President of the Ikoyi Club Tennis section, Ede Osemwingie, expressed his excitement with the level of competition as the players put up a very good display.
“This is the first time people at this club are exposed to such a high profile encounter here, and it is worthy of commendation,” an elated Osemwingie said.
