Ekiti United Make NNL Debut Against Akwa Starlets

Ekiti State will make history on Saturday, 15 February, when her pet team Ekiti United Football Club make their debut in the Nigeria National League, NNL, in an opening match against Akwa Starlets in Uyo.
The football loving Ekiti fans had waited for years before the State Governor, Kayode Fayemi endorsed the formation of United, who are ready to compete for honours in Group B of the NNL this season.
Secretary of Ekiti United, Deji Olowolafe said the team are now in the right shape to begin their campaign in the 2013/2014 NNL season, having successfully completed their pre-season preparations this week.
The Ekiti United scribe disclosed that the club management registered 30 players to prosecute their matches this season. According to him, skipper/centre defender of the club, Ogunrinde Paul leads the list of 14 players signed from the State’s lower division team, Fountain FC.
It was gathered that Ekiti United also signed five players from Canaan FC, three players from Crown FC and a player from Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Kano Pillars.
“The coming of Ekiti United has finally quenched the thirst for top football action amongst our people and our team would travel from Ado Ekiti to Uyo between Thursday and Friday to honour the opening match against Akwa Starlets on Saturday”, the Ekiti United Secretary said.
One prominent player who is likely to steer Ekiti United’s attack against Akwa Starlets is striker Damola Fakayode, who was signed from Fountain FC.
Chief Coach of the Ekiti side, Adewumi Moses has urged his players to be focused and ensure they start their campaign in the NNL on a promising note.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts to ensure that Ekiti United perform well during the Nigeria National League this season, the club management engaged the team in some tune-up games including a two-legged friendly against Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin.
Ekiti United also played a 2-2 draw with Sunshine Stars of Akure in a friendly match at the Ijebu-Ode Stadium last month, and defeated Kogi United 1-0 before rounding off their pre-season games against Prime FC at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday.
