Dolphins Emem Eduok and Enyimba’s Mfon Udoh on Sunday matched Jude Aneke’s three-season-old record of 20 goals mark by a player in the Glo Premier League in one seaso.
Aneke, then playing for Kaduna United notched up 20 goals in the 2010/11 season to erase a previous record of 18 goals held by Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa who starred then for Kano Pillars reports www.lmc-ng.org.
Playing for Dolphins against Bayelsa United in a Match Day 36 fixture in Benin, Eduok struck after 20 minutes to bring his side level after they went behind in the 10th minute courtesy of Peter Ebimobowei’s 15th goal of the season. Dolphins will go on to lose 3-1, a result that blew away their title dreams and now leaves them contending for continental glory through the Federation Cup final against Enyimba on 23 November.
In Omoku, relegation confirmed Nembe City was playing the spoilers for Enyimba with a first half lead off the boots of Okiki Musampa. But in form hot shot, Udoh made good several wasted opportunities, smashing home on 78thminute to equalize for the six times league champions.
It was his 19th goal and when the Peoples Elephant fans were making do with one point, Udoh completed a brace on 88 minutes to rekindle their 7th title aspirations.
Midweek, Eduok had set another league record when he smashed six goals past Nembe City at the Liberation Stadium in a Match Day 35 fixture. He was two goals better than the four goals record in single matches held by the duo of Victor Ezeji and Christian Pyagbara.
It will be recalled that early in the season, Udoh following Enyimba’s ouster from the CAF Champions League had set himself a personal goal target of 20 goals which he has now attained.
Interestingly, both players are protégés of Akwa United FC of Uyo, a club reputed for a thriving developmental youth football programme. The two have thus scored 40 goals between them in equal halves.
Other high scoring players in the league include the duo of Super Eagles forwards, Osaguona Ighodaro of Rangers and Gbolahan Salami of Warri Wolves who have scored 16 goals each while Bayelsa United’s Peter Ebimobowei is on 15 goals.
It may well be that Salami and Osaguona have dropped out of the race with injuries that may have limited their further participation in the remaining games of the season.
