Edo Schools Gear Up For Rugby Tourney

In preparation for the much talked about Edo State Rugby Schools Championship scheduled for June, 2016, the respective Schools are raring to go in the on-going “Catch Them Young” Rugby Pilot Program.

The schools are particularly excited over the recent donation of Rugby Balls to the 10 selected schools by the newly appointed Chairman of the Edo State Rugby Association & Commissioner for Housing & Urban Development Arc Frank Evbuomwan.

According to the coordinator of the World Rugby School’s program tagged; “Get Into Rugby” in Edo State, who is also the World Rugby Educator for Nigeria & Head Coach of Edo State Rugby Association Mr Ntiense Williams, “The Schools are gearing up for the much talked about First Edo State Rugby Schools Championship coming up in June”.

It was gathered that the schools have arranged Friendly Rugby Matches amongst themselves to size each other up before the Tournament.

“This is also in celebration of Coach Jeremiah Imbue’s Birthday who has been their motivator”, Williams said in a press release.

The followings are schedule for the matches slated to be played at Idia Collage;

Idia College will lock horns with Emotan Collage on Tuesday, 31 May 2016 at Idia Collage grounds. The second match will witness Ihogbe College Girls squaring up against Idia College Junior Girls on Wednesday, 1 June 2016.

The third match of the lined-up friendlies will see Ihogbe Boys playing Prison School Boys on Wednesday, 1 June 2016, while Niger Collage Boys will trade tackles with Ogbe Boys same day.

In ensuring that the students meet up with World Rugby standards as regards safety, the newly appointed Chairman of the Edo State Rugby Association and Commissioner for Housing & Urban Development, Arc Frank Evbuomwan has graciously promised to donated Rugby specific First-Aid Kits to all participating schools.

“There are 10 Schools involved in the pilot program drawn from Primary and Secondary schools and male and female pupils and students would feature in the games.

“You will recall that Edo State is the back-to-back defending female national champions, and four gold medalists in the National Sports Festival Rugby events, a feat yet to be broken by any state in the federation”, Williams said.

Meanwhile, the official inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed sports association board members in Edo State will come up on Wednesday, 8 June 2016 at 10:00am at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
