Dolphins Beat Gombe 2-0

Two goals within a space of six minutes in the second half gave Port Harcourt-based side, Dolphins all three points at the expense of Gombe United in a Glo Premier League Matchday 27 encounter decided at the Liberation Stadium on Sunday.
Full-back Chizoba Amaefule scored the opener from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute after Ebube Opokwu was adjudged to have been a victim of rough play inside the penalty box.
Five minutes later, Team’s top scorer Emem Eduok scored a superb solo effort to seal a 2-0 win for the 2011 Champions.
Dolphins welcomed back midfielder Emeka Atuloma to the starting lineup after he missed the midweek loss at Rangers due to a thigh strain. He was joined in the starting lineup by Ifeanyi Egwim who was a first half substitute in Enugu.
For Gombe United, they had to make do without Super Eagles goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim who Coach Austin Eguavoen confirmed picked up an injury during a stellar display against Sharks in the other side of Port Harcourt in midweek.
Former Dolphins stars Austin Ekpoma and Naseem Abutreka were also in the starting lineup against their former employers.
The visitors had an early chance to go in front but Morris Chigozie headed over the bar when totally left unmarked inside the six-yard box.
It was the turn of Dolphins to seize the initiative and Emem Eduok fired over the bar from close range and was followed by a string of poor decision making from Dolphins’ attackers which ensured there was no change to the scoreline.
If there was no change on the scoreboard, Dolphins Technical Adviser was ready to change his playing personnel and he sent on the duo of Isiaka Olawale and Victor Alegbe early in the second half.
The changes brought about more urgency in the hosts’ display and were soon creating good scoring chances.
To make matters worse for the visitors, Former Dolphins star, Austin Ekpoma was sent off by Referee Ajao from Kwara State in the 58th minute for dissent. Minutes later, Opokwu missed what would’ve been the opener for Dolphins when he shot wide after being put through on goal by Olawale.
Not to worry though, the curtain raiser came in the 73rd minute when former Flying Eagles right back Chizoba coolly converted from 12 yards.
The game was made safe for Dolphins by Eduok who took four players of the Savannah Scorpions in his stride before chipping over on-rushing goalkeeper, Ahmed Yusuff.
It was Eduok’s 10th league goal of the season and his first since MatchDay 23.
The win takes Dolphins back to 4th spot with 42 points, five points behind leaders Kano Pillars who edged out Akwa United 1-0.
