The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr Solomon Dalung, has urged Nigeria’s U-23 team participating in the Africa U-23 Football Championships, which begins this weekend in Senegal, to go for glory.
In a statement , Barr Dalung assured the team of the unalloyed support of all Nigerians including President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigeria is in Group B where they will face Egypt, Algeria and Mali.
The championship is the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil. The competition will run from November 28 to December 12, 2015 in Senegal.
The top three teams from the competition will qualify to represent Africa at Rio 2016.
The opening game will be between Senegal and South Africa while Nigeria will play their first game against Mali on November 29 at the 5000-seater Caroline Faye Stadium, Mbour.
Dalung said he has confidence in Coach Samson Siasia to succeed in a terrain he has recorded success several times,
“ With Coach Siasia leading the team, Nigerians are confident that the team will not only earn the Olympics ticket in Senegal, but will also perform well in Rio and be among the top contenders for the gold medal which they narrowly missed at Beijing 2008 Olympics when they lost to Argentina in the final’’ said Dalung.
He urged the players to be dedicated and focused, as honour and glory await them at the end of the championship.
