Young Nigerian tennis sensations, MaryLove Edwards and Angel McCleod will seek to outshine each other in Saturday’s final (today) showdown in the Girls 14 and under at the NNPC Junior Circuit in Kaduna.
The youngsters, who both qualified for the final courtesy of their respective semi final wins yesterday, will be meeting for the third time in the space of a month to decide who the better player is.
Edwards, whose performance in her 9-5 semi-final win against Favour Moses was the first time she had dropped a game in the tournament, having won with consecutive 9-0 victories, will seek to improve her lot against a rather ruthless McCleod, who swept past Kaosara Adegboyega with a 9-1 win.
A disappointed Edwards told eyeonthesports.com after the match that, “I just cannot explain what happened but I know that I did not play well. If she were a stronger player, she would have punished me”.
In the boys U-10, new wonder kid, tipped to emerge as the tournament’s most outstanding player, Gabriel Richard from the VGC Tennis Club, will seek to end his fairytale run on a resounding note when he exchanges strokes with another impressive lad, Abdullahi Ajanaku.
The boys U-14 finals will see home boy, Gabriel Friday taking on Benjamin Ayuba just as another Kaduna-based talent Christopher Itodo will seek to win his first boy’s U-16 trophy in the final match against Chris Bulus.
All matches will be decided this afternoon inside the Murtala Square, Kaduna as the tournament finally comes to an end today.
