The superlative form displayed by Nigerian stars John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses in Chelsea’s pre-season games may have offered them starting shirts with The Blues when they battle London rivals, Arsenal in Sunday’s FA Community Shield.
Moses looks more plausible for a starting role, following his goal in open play against Paris Saint Germain and another game during Wednesday’s shoot-out win against Barcelona, while Mikel looks likely to play another substitute role as an impact player.
The top form exhibited by Moses has already ruled him out of a return to Stoke City on loan or transfer to another club for that matter, and the velvety winger-cum-attacker would be keen to justify the new confidence Jose Mourinho has in him by storming through Arsenal’s defence on Sunday.
The match sees the English Premier League champions face the FA Cup winners as Mourinho and his opposing manager, Arsene Wenger, who are currently locked in a war of words, look to claim bragging rights.
Wenger’s men have been busy during the off-season as they were participating in a number of friendlies as well as the Emirates Cup where they were rampant in beating Lyon before clinching the cup with a win over Wolfsburg.
The Gunners have managed to acquire the services of Czech goalkeeper, Petr Czech from Chelsea and have been linked to Gabon’s Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but there’s been nothing agreed by the two teams thus far.
While Mourinho could be without the duo of star striker Diego Costa and centre-back Gary Cahill due to injuries, Moses and Mikel could be in action for the champions, a report in sportsday claims.
Odds are on Moses getting a starter’s role, while Mikel comes off the bench in the second half of the match, which is set to get underway on Sunday, August 2 at Wembley Stadium from 16:00 (CAT).
