Club Tourney: Gombe Bulls Records First Continental Victory

Kator Gar powered Gombe Bulls to their first win on the continent at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 3 club championship for men when they defeated Civil Defenders by 76 points to 66.

The team led by Coach Mohammed Abdulrahman ended the 1st half on a strong note leading their fellow continental newbies by 35 point to 27.

Gombe started the 2nd half where they left off with AbdulWahab Yakubu weighing in with 11 points, 2 steals and 2 assists.

Former Dodan Warriors captain, Simon Owoicho also recorded 14 points, 2 steals and 1 assist for the Bulls enroute their historic win.

Despite the spirited effort from Gideon Omoduku with 19 points and 1 assist, Defenders could not salvage a win against a much experienced Bulls who maintained their lead all through the game.

Speaking after the game, head coach of Gombe Bulls, Mohammed Abdulrahman attributed their victory to the new found belief of the team which had to bounce back from their unimpressive display in the 2016 league season.

According to Abdulrahman, “Our target is to get to this stage after our hardwork during the regular season. Anything we get going forward will be a bonus but also deserved.”

On his part, head coach of Civil Defence, Temitope Olowosulu traced their loss to the inability to clear all their players before the tournament.

Olowosulu praised his boys for showing the necessary mental strength to withstand the barrage of their opponents towards the end of the 4th quarter.

Ahead of their game against Kano Pillars on Tuesday, he promised to give their more experienced side a good run for their money.
