The 2014 Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Invitational championship gets underway at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan from Monday, 17 November.
Secretary General of Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Mrs. Gloria Ukwemkpu, said all arrangement to have a successful tournament, which is being sponsored by Etisalat Nigeria, FCMB, LASACO, Julius Berger and other sponsors, has been put in place.
Mrs. Ukwemkpu, said that the federation and the Local Organising Committee, LOC, of the Governor’s Cup, are leaving nothing to chance to ensure that the ‘abridged’ invitational tournament, which has over N13.8 million (about $84,000) as prize money, is well organised.
The Main Draws of both the Men’s and Women’s Singles serve off on day one, with invited players across Africa including Nigeria already in Lagos for the competition.
The NTF scribe, Mrs. Ukwemkpu disclosed that the draws for the tournament was done on Sunday, while hostilities begin 9a.m on Monday at the Centre Court of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan Lagos.
Vice chairman of the LOC, Engr. Afolabi. Salami said the players especially those from other African countries would enjoy the LOC-sponsored hospitality, which includes accommodation and breakfast at the Eko Hotel and Suites, while Nigerian players would be paid N10, 000 daily subsidy in lieu of accommodation for the period they remain in the championship.
Although no ATP points are expected at the end of the competition, the dollars prize money is something the players would be looking forward to winning.
“We have prepared and are ready to organise a memorable tournament and I believe our players are battle ready as well. There is no doubt we’ll have some of our players playing in the final this time around no matter the opposition from their colleagues across Africa”, said Mrs. Ukwemkpu.
