Efforts by the Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF to immortalise its former vice-president, Late Tonye Harry is gathering momentum as a tournament will be held in his honour come October.
Disclosing this to eyeonthesports.com was president, Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Engr. Sani Ndanusa during an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC President also explained that the tourney will serve as a tune-up for the annual Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship.
“The proposed Tonye Harry Classics in honour of our late Vice-President will hold in October, just a year after his demise.
“We are seriously working on logistics for the event because it has to be a great one since it is in remembrance of a great man.
“It will also serve as a tune-up for our players towards the Governor’s Cup to put them in proper shape ahead of the international tourney”.
The late speaker of Rivers State House of Representatives, died in Algeria last year after a protracted illness.
Meanwhile, a junior tennis championship will be held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Court, LLTC simultaneously with the CBN Open.
According to Ndanusa, “a junior tennis event will also be held at the Lagos Lawn while the CBN Open is going on. It will help the players, especially those who are on holidays to stay in shape before resumption”.
Confirming this also was Director, International Tennis Academy, ITA, Godwin Kienka, who noted that it will be a national tournament for the junior players.
“The tournament is called, ‘Mid-Western Oil and Gas Junior Championship’ organised for our youngsters in order to keep grooming them and to put them in proper shape.
“It will be another national tournament which will hold from 12-18 May at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club. Players from all over the Federation are eligible to participate,” he informed.
