Former Super Eagles skipper Joseph Yobo, popular Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo and multi-talented music act Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz the Bahd Guy, have lauded Trophy Lager for initiating the Trophy 5-A-Side Field of Honour, a grassroots football tournament.

The trio were speaking during the Launch of the 5-A-Side project by International Breweries Plc on Tuesday, 26 February. The well attended event was held at the Fun Turf in Lekki, where Yobo, Femi and Falz were unveiled as the campaign ambassadors of Trophy Larger.

Yobo, Femi and Falz described the 5-A-Side Field Of Honour as a good and rewarding venture that will divert the attention of young Nigerians from social vices, saying future football stars would be discovered from the competition.

Organisers of the tournament, International Breweries Plc, say the first competition will hold in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun and Osun States. According to the company, the event will commence with a knock-out stage in all participating states while the semi-finals and finals will hold in Lagos State, where the winners will smile home with the sum of N3m.

“In addition to that sum, the winning team will qualify for the all expense paid to feature in the Africa 5-A-Side tournament regional finals slated for Tanzania”, the organisers and sponsors told the media on Tuesday.

It was gathered at the launch that the tournament is open to all customers of Trophy Lager beer while interested players will be recruited as 10-man teams through accredited bars across the four states.

“Details of participation are available in major bars with the tournament kicking-off with the teams representing their communities in a round-robin stage, after which winners will proceed to the knock out stages. The 10-week-long campaign will produce a final winner by May 12, 2019”, officials of Trophy Larger hinted.

Speaking more on the event, BU President, West Africa, International Breweries, Annabelle Degroot, said her company put its customers first and strive to give them all round value whether in an experiential manner or otherwise.

“That is why we are happy that the Trophy 5-A-Side Field of Honour tournament will resonate well with our people who are also football lovers”, Annabelle told the media.

Marketing Director, International Breweries, Mrs Tolu Adedeji also explained the Trophy Larger 5-A-Side tournament was designed to create an “opportunity for our customers to celebrate and represent their communities”. She said the unique tournament was also designed to tap into the passion many Nigerians have for soccer as they enjoy the beer they love the most.

Trophy, that recently celebrated 40 years of facilitating goodwill and honour added another colour to the Launch with a novelty football match between IB Plc team and Lagos Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). The interesting and action-packed encounter ended 2-2 after extra time.
