TIG Gymnasts of Nigeria won 16 medals at the just concluded 2018 edition of the African International level system Championships in Pretoria, South Africa.
The team, led by head coach, Anthony Asuquo got 4 gold, 2 silver and 10 bronze medals with 22 gymnasts participating in the event.
Moferanoluwa Lawal, Yimika Kolade, Mindy Akinola and Avani won gold medals while Nimishe Sandeep and Morola Lawal won silver for Nigeria.
Geda Liyel-Imoke, Volda Liyel-Imoke and Daval liyel-Imoke; children of Former Cross Rivers state governor, Liyel-Imoke, as well as Safiya Tukur, daughter of the Speaker, Borno State House of Assembly won bronze medals.
The others who won silver are; Adila Salisu, Lara Anot, Safiya Tukur, Iseoluwa Babarinde, Amaka Asemota, Daniella Asemota and Tamilore Falayajo.
Nigeria Sports minster, Solomon Dalung said, “All thanks to God Almighty they are done with the first competition. Nigeria also got 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronze medals at the just concluded African Age groups level system championship”.
“The Nigerian team came out tops in the last edition of the championship but Coach Asuquo is optimistic the team will do better this time. “We are working hard to win more medals for Nigeria this year”, He said.
Dalung said “Various sports in Nigeria are taking a new and higher dimension and with determination, we will reposition sport and place Nigeria among other global sports competitors across the world”.
The country will participate in the Regional and Junior Olympics level competition from 3-5 August.
