Reports from the organisers of the inaugural edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon say close to one hundred and fifty local and international elite runners have signed on for the race.
As at close of work on Sunday, over twenty thousand runners have submitted their entry forms, while half of that number have collected their running numbers, race day information and other materials.
Yussuf Alli, General Manager Lagos City Marathon organizer of the 2016 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon said the response is good,
“I am delighted about the response of local and international elite runners.
“High Attitude Athletics Club of Jos alone is sending about 30 elites runners, marathoners are coming from all the nook and crannies of Nigeria. We have athletes from Kaduna, Calabar, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, and other parts of Nigeria.
“As at Sunday about sixty elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, India, Cameroon, Asia, Europe and America have entered for the race, this is very good”.
Alli said the response of fun runners, those running for one charity or the other, and even volunteers have being very encouraging.
“We are delighted to have people who are coming from the United States and other parts of the world to be volunteers, so many celebrities like Olamide, Patoranking, Sound Sultan and others have signed to run and entertain at the finish point, for our first race, this is good news”.
Alli appealed to Lagosians to come out in their thousands to cheer the runners as the city of Lagos and Lagosians are the ultimate winner.
“The essence of the Lagos City Marathon is to encourage the culture of running, keep fit and exercise, this will breed healthier citizens, and better workforce.
“Other advantages of marathons include boosting the local economy especially the hospitality and the tourism industry, New York, Dubai, Paris, London and other mega cities with marathon are enjoying the above and other advantages of marathon and road races, now it’s the turn of Lagos, we must all embrace it”.
