Oyedeji Counts Gains Of Basketball Camp

National Basketball star, Olumide Oyedeji says his Annual Olumide Oyedeji Basketball camp is getting better every year, stressing that his foundation is achieving its initiative to empower the youths create a brighter future in the sport.
Oyedeji, who was speaking at the finals of this year’s edition held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday, expressed satisfaction about the talents discovered at the week-long event.
The 2014 edition of the camp took place between 1-6 September, where hundreds of youths learned the rudiments of basketball from selected coaches.

The Basketball camp, according to Oyedeji is aimed at teaching personal excellence in basketball, education and life in general.
“The camp encourages belief in personal responsibilities. It also instills habit of hard work and also stimulates youths’ interest in actively taking up sports, particularly basketball for recreation and profession instead of indulging in social vices”, Oyedeji told reporters during the closing ceremony in Lagos.
Oyedeji, who led the Nigerian male Basketball team; D’Tigers to the country’s first Olympic Games, said: “I’m doing this to give back to the society that made me.
“I derive joy seeing smiles on the faces of the youths and their response to the Basketball camp gives me fulfillment. I must also confess that this year’s edition was a huge success”.

Oyedeji however regretted the poor state of Basketball in Nigeria, saying it was time that government gives full support to boost the game.
“I have been sponsoring the Basketball camp for about 15 years but I’m yet to get sponsors to boost it. Basketball needs awareness in Nigeria as its goes hand-in-hand with education.
During the closing ceremony, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, makers of Honeywell Noodles, partnered with Oyedeji as the company gave out its products to participants during the finals.
Mrs. Omenebele Oluwalana, the Assistant Manager, Brand Activation of Honeywell, explained why the company partnered with Oyedeji at the finals of his Basketball camp.
She said: “Our company’s partnership with Oyedeji is to fulfill Honeywell’s social responsibility to the society. In addition, Honeywell has the interest of the youths at heart, that’s what we have demonstrated by supporting the Oyedeji Basketball camp”.
Meanwhile, one of the participants, Olamuyiwa Olanrewaju, of the Rookies Academy, Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, said he enjoyed a week of fulfillment at the camp, and that he learnt a lot from the basketball star.
