Oriental Derby: Hooligans Extend Notorious Hands To Anyansi

.LMC Orders Replay At Okigwe Stadium On Monday –

Suspected football hooligans went on the rampage and unleashed terror on some spectators including Enyimba boss Felix Anyansi-Agwu on Sunday during a Nigeria Pro-Football League (NPFL) Match-Day 20 encounter between Abia Warriors and visiting Enyimba Football Club in Umuahia.

This newspaper gathered that the oriental derby was just 20 minutes into the first half when an argument between fans of Abia Warriors and Enyimba turned into a free for all fight at Umuahia Stadium.

The match was abruptly brought to an end as dangerous items such as stones, broken chairs and bottles were thrown across the stands.

The popular stands at Umuahia Stadium; ‘York’ and ‘Columbia’ including other areas were consistently hit with stones, forcing the spectators, who attempted to run for their lives, to suffer various degrees of injuries.

The Police and other security personnel on duty put up spirited efforts to stop the pandemonium but the tense situation didn’t allow the game to continue.

The Chairman of Abia Warriors Pastor Emeka Inyama also tried in vain to calm the rampaging fans but Anyansi was unlucky on the day as he suffered a head injury in the fracas.

It was further gathered that aside from injuries suffered by many fans, some properties which included reserve seats were destroyed in the stadium.

Sunday’s match was the reverse fixture of the derby between Abia Warriors and the People’s Elephant. Warriors lost 2-1 to Enyimba at Aba Township Stadium last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Enyimba boss Anyansi was taken to the Federal Medical Cente in Umuahia for treatment, while the other injured fans were also treated at various medical centres.

The League Management Company (LMC) in an official statement same day, instructed the abandoned encounter be played behind closed doors on Monday, 17 February, 2020 at Okigwe Stadium in Imo State.

Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LMC Mallam Salihu Abubakar said the match must be played without fans at 10am on Monday.
