Nigeria’s Elizabeth Pam on Sunday emerged winner of the U-16 girls category of the Western and Central African tennis qualifiers for the African Junior Championship, AJC held in Abuja, north-central Nigeria.
The UK-based Lizzy Pam defeated Marie Sia of Cote d’Ivoire 6-2, 6-2 in the final match, while
Chris Itodo also of Nigeria defeated Aliyou Arzika of Niger Republic 6-2, 7-5 in the U-14 Boys category.
Pam was discovered during the first National Youth Games organised by the Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi-led Sports ministry late last year in Abuja.
Nigeria dominated the competition, winning 6 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medals in the first round, and repeated same in the second and final rounds concluded on Sunday.
The medals came in the boys’ U-12 doubles which was won by the pair of Michael Osewa and Friday Gabriel after knocking out fellow Nigerian duo of Daniel Joshua and Sani Moussa 6-2, 6-1.
Another pair of medals came in the second all-Nigerian affair of the evening when the U-16 girls’ doubles final confirmed Elizabeth Pam and Zainab as worthy winners against Faith Sunday and Fortune Aniso with a 6-1, 6-4.
The last pair of medals came in the boys’ U-14 doubles final match which the Nigerian combination of Christopher Itodo and Peter Lawal won by defeating Anozie Chidera and Michael Ayola, 6-1, 7-6(2).
