The hierarchy of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) is confident D’Tigers will do well in the next round of 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers for men between 14th and 16th of September.
NBBF President, Engineer Musa Kida believes a tough challenge is expected when the qualifiers dunk off as D’Tigers are to do battle with former African Champions, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Central Africa Republic.
Despite Lagos hosting the qualifiers, Kida said the fans should not expect an easy ride over their opponents who will also be desperate to qualify for the 2019 World Cup slated for China.
“I am sure that September window is going to be tough but I am confident our team will live up to its name as number one in Africa,” Kida said.
Kida explained that the September window, which is the second consecutive qualifiers that Lagos will host, is very important for the federation to show Nigerians the caliber and quality of Nigerian players who are willing to come and play for their country.
He reiterated that; “The federation believes the best should represent the country and I echo that very loudly, that’s the reason Nigeria has won most of the tournaments she has participated in within the last one year.”
“Our selection process has been very open, we have extended invitations to our top players and other Nigerian professionals abroad and within the country to come and try their luck in camp”, he said.
He pledged that under his watch, the best players available will always be called upon to don the colours of the national team.
“I am also encouraged that if we are transparent and do things this way, we shall prevail as the best in Africa.”
Afolabi Oni, Media officer of NBBF hinted that D’Tigers camp has already been declared open with the arrival of Head Coach, Alex Nwora, while all players are expected to report on Sunday, 9th of September.
