A 38-year-old electrician, Opeoluwa Abiola, who allegedly raped his wife may be jailed for life, eyeonthenews.com reports.
Abiola was however remanded in prison after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said that the accused should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons pending when his bail conditions would be fulfilled.
The Magistrate, Mrs O. I Raji granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Abiola, however, could not immediately meet the bail condition and was remanded in prison.
The accused, who resides in Akute in Ogun State, is facing a two-count charge of assault and rape.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the Court that the accused committed the offences on June 30 at Liasu Street, Akute.
According to him, the accused assaulted and raped his wife, Oreoluwa.
Egunjobi said the accused, who had abandoned the complainant for another woman, stormed her house and demanded to make love to her.
“The accused left the complainant last December and he came back in June under the pretext of coming to check the welfare of their five-year-old son.
“When he wanted to make love to the complainant, she prevented him and the accused descended on her through beating.
“He tore her clothes and underwears and forcefully inserted his manhood into her private part and had canal knowledge of her in the presence of their child.
“The accused forcefully went away with the only child of the marriage without the complainant’s consent ,” he said.
The offences, Egunjobi said, contravened Sections 173 and 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The accused may be jailed for life if found guilty of rape according to the provisions of Section 260.
The case was adjourned to July 18 for mention.
