A 50-year-old mechanic, Sheu Adio, who allegedly raped his friend’s wife was hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, Nigeria.
The accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs Davies Abegunde, on a one count charge of rape.
Adio, a resident of Ogba Road, Agege, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Abegunde said that one of the sureties must be a blood relation and the other a religious leader and both must show evidences of two years tax payment to Lagos State government.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Racheal Donny, the accused committed the offence on January 10, 2017 at his residence.
He said that the accused raped his friend’s pregnant wife without her consent.
Donny said that the complainant moved in with the accused when they had accommodation problem.
“The complainant and her husband had accommodation problem and the accused who is living in a three-bedroom apartment asked them to move in with him until they get accommodation,” he said
The prosecutor said that the accused unlawfully entered into the complainant’s apartment when the husband had gone for a night duty.
“The accused went to meet the complainant on her bedroom and was begging her for sex.
“The complainant pushed him away and the accused went to her kitchen brought out a knife and threatening to cut her stomach to bring out the foetus if she refused to comply.
“The complainant for fear of the unknown, surrendered herself for sex,” he said
According to the prosecutor, the accused absconded from his house after the incident and was arrested after six-month of his disappearance.
The offence contravened section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The accused may be jailed for life if found guilty of rape according to the provisions of Section 260.
Meanwhile, the case was adjourned to July 4 for mention.
