Fans Vote Mikel Nigeria’s Best Player In 2013

Readers and fans of Eyeonthesports.com have voted midfielder John Mikel Obi of Chelsea Football Club as Nigeria’s Best Player in 2013.
Mikel, who played a vital role in Super Eagles’ African Cup of Nations, AFCON, success in South Africa in February this year, led the polls with 67 per cent.
Turkey-based Emmanuel Emenike, a fantastic striker came second with 33 per cent, while defender Godfrey Oboabona and attacking midfielder Sunday Mba, were not considered for the award by the fans.
Mikel has won similar awards this year, and he is among the finalists for this year’s Glo/CAF Player Of The Year Award to be announced in Lagos on 9 January, 2014.
Mikel, who was discovered from the Jos branch of Pepsi Football Academy, PFA in Plateau State, has been a regular in Chelsea since he moved to Stamford Bridge from Lyn Oslo of Norway in June 2006.
At Chelsea, the Nigerian international has won many trophies including an English Premier League title, UEFA Champions League title and four English FA Cups.
Mikel, who was selected as second best player of the FIFA U-20 World Cup (Next to Lionel Messi of Argentina,) held in the Netherlands in 2005, scored his first English Premier League goal for Chelsea in a 2-0 victory against Fulham in September this year.
Mikel also showed his class in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, which the Blues won via penalty shootout after a pulsating 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes.
Mikel’s current contract expires at Chelsea in 2017, and he is being tipped to captain the Super Eagles in the near future. He also helped the Eagles to qualify for the FIFA World Cup slated for Brazil in 2014.
