Nigeria’s Super Eagles will return home Sunday night after featuring in the African Nations Championship, CHAN, for about three weeks in South Africa.
The first timers won a consolatory bronze medal at the tourney, with skipper Chigozie Agbim, appealing to football loving Nigerians to forgive the Eagles for coming short of expectations.
“We came here with the intention to win the championship, but we could not make it. However, we thank God that we still won a bronze medal, the fair play trophy and we also produced the Player of the Tournament”, Agbim said.
Media Officer of the Nigerian side, Ben Alaiya disclosed that the Eagles will depart Cape Town, venue of the final match on Sunday morning and head for Johannesburg, where they would connect another flight to Lagos.
Alaiya hinted that the Eagles will leave for their final destination in Abuja on Tuesday morning after a brief stop over in Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Sunday S. Yusuf, has admonished the Super Eagles to make humility their watchword, as they aspire for higher football challenges, with big money moves for some of the players looming.
The envoy who visited the team during their dinner at the Garden Court Hotel, said he was convinced the team will go places, adding that he will keep advertising the players to the highest level of governance in Nigeria.
“President Goodluck Jonathan and our country, Nigeria, who I represent here in South Africa are proud of you. But we must not allow the little success we achieved here to get into our heads”, he said.
