A 50 year-old Muslim cleric, Ahmed Sodiq, who allegedly raped one 30 years businesswoman for five days and defrauded her of N800,000, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused was arraigned before Magistrate J.A. Adigun on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and rape.
Sodiq, who resides on Ajasa Command Road in Ipaja area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty, and was admitted to a bail of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awaze, the accused committed the offences between May 16 and May 20 at Gate Bus-Stop, Abesan Housing Estate, Ipaja, Lagos.
Awaze said that the accused raped the woman,(name withheld) and defrauded her of N800,000.
“The accused accosted the complainant when she came out of a bank under the pretext of asking her for a direction.
“He hypnotised her with a substance suspected to be charm, and asked her to give him the N800,000 she just withdrew, in which the complainant complied”, he said.
The prosecutor said that the accused took the complainant to his house and raped her for five days.
“The accused was having canal knowledge of the complainant without her consent. It was when the complainant regained her senses that she reported the case to the Police, and the accused was arrested,” he said.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 260 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).
The accused may be jailed for life if found guilty of rape, according to the provisions of Section 260.
The case has been adjourned to July 24 for mention.
