Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has announced Mahmood Yakubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The announcement was made on Wednesday at the council of state meeting in Abuja.
The appointment of Yakubu, a professor of political history and international studies, is still subject to ratification by the senate.
The former Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund is taking over from acting Chairperson of the Commission, Amina Zakari.
Zakari has now been appointed as the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.Alongside Zakari, the Council also appointed Dr. Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine (North Central), Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (North-East), Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (South-South) and Mr. Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (South-West) as INEC Commissioners,
The South-East was excluded because their is still a sitting national commissioner for the region.
