AYG: Team Nigeria Grab 15 Gold

Team Nigeria on Thursday consolidated their position on the medals table at the 2nd African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana when they earned more gold medals to increase their haul to 15, eight more than the seven they won at the inaugural edition held in Morocco four years ago.
They now have 15 gold, 7 silver and 11 bronze medals to place third behind South Africa and Egypt with two days left for curtains to be drawn on the Games.
One of the two gold medals yesterday came from the unexpected field of golf where Anita Uwadia beat all the contestants in the Girls’ singles and also led three others namely Diana Osmond, Sunday Yusuf and Tokunbo Pedro, son of former Lagos state Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro to win silver in the Team event.
The other gold came from another female athlete, Favour Debeiyen who won in the C1 Canoe Sprint event and also got bronze in the K1 Sprint while Gbamire Goodluck Blessing took the C1 Sprint silver in the Boys’ category.
Earlier, boxing produced a gold medal through Agwu Celina Ezinne in the Girls’ 69-76 kg category while Oyakojo Muideen Ojo and Isiaka Kazeem got bronze and silver in the Light Fly weight and Heavy weight categories respectively.
Karate got three bronze medals in the Team Kata event as well as -76kg male and +59kg female through Odoemenam Divine Favour and Nwankwo Caroline Ujunwa respectively, while Taekwondo which began competition on Wednesday got a bronze in the -63kg Girls’ category through Esther Godwin.
Meanwhile acting Chef De Mission, Dr. Bolaji Ojo-Oba said he was optimistic more medals will be won on Friday as competition hots up in Canoeing, Tennis, Athletics, Volleyball and football.
The U-15 football team only need a draw against Swaziland to pocket gold as they lead the pack of six teams in the Games with 10 points and remain the only team yet to lose a match.
