Three men, Seun Jimoh, Ayodele Babatunde and Steve Ogah have allegedly defiled and impregnated a 12-year-old girl (name withheld) in Lagos, Nigeria.
The accused; Jimoh 40, a plumber, Babatunde, 38, tricyclist and Ogah, 38 a trader, who reside at different parts of Agege area of Lagos are standing trial on charges of indecent treatment of a child, conspiracy and defilement.
Eyeonthenews.com’s correspondent was at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court when the men were released on bail of N500,000 each on Wednesday.
The trio, however, entered a `not-guilty’ plea. An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, which gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties each as part of the bail conditions.
The Magistrate, Mr T. Akanni, said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidences of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, the accused committed the offences sometime in the month of March at Adesola Street, Agege, Lagos.
He said that the accused conspired to defile a 12-year-old girl and also impregnated her.
“The accused who are all married men had canal knowledge of the girl who just lost her mother few weeks earlier and also put her in a family way,” he said.
Ogu said that the first accused, Jimoh, hosted his friends in his house and the girl was called inside under the pretext of sending her to buy soft drinks for them.
“The first accused called the girl who was sent home from school over school fee to come and buy soft drinks for his friends who came to visit him.
“When the girl entered, the first accused started touching the girl’s breast, and promised to give her money for her school fees. He removed her school uniform and have sex with her but never gave her any money.
“His friends also defiled the girl in turns”, he said.
The prosecutor said that after three months, the girl slumped and she was rushed to the hospital where it was confirmed that she was pregnant.
“When it was discovered that the girl was pregnant, her father asked her daughter who made love to her and she told her father everything that transpired between her and the accused.
“The girl’s father reported the case to the Police, the first accused who is a neighbour was arrested and he led the Police to the arrest of his accomplices,” he said.
The offences contravened sections 135, 137 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
Section 137 stipulates life imprisonment for child defilement.
Meanwhile, the case was adjourned to July 25 for mention.
